L'origine du blues remonte aux chants des noirs américains au début du XXe siècle. Il s'agissait de compositions qui évoquaient le mal de vivre et les difficultés de la vie quotidienne. Chants du désespoir et de la détresse, le blues a donc pour origine aussi bien la campagne que la ville (les "work songs"). Le blues peut désigner le style musical (l'instrument roi du blues étant la guitare, accompagnée à l'occasion par un harmonica), mais aussi l'état d'esprit ("I've got the blues") ou même la manière d'interpréter (suivre les "blues notes", ces notes de la gamme qui sont spécifiques au blues). La véritable musique blues peut être considérée comme étant à l'origine de l'ensemble des musiques afro-américaine, même si l'on trouve du côté de la religion, l'interprétation des spirituals et des gospels (le blues étant réservé à la musique profane). Le courant musical, assimilé plus exactement au "country blues" s'est peu à peu déplacé des champs de coton du Sud des Etats Unis pour migrer vers les grandes villes du Nord (Chicago, Detroit,ou Kansas City). Mais le coeur musical du mouvement est à situer entre la Nouvelle Orleans et Memphis. Le blues s'est peu à peu électrifié au contact des villes, perdant son identité de "Delta Blues", se transformant même à l'occasion en boogie woogie, qui emprunte au ragtime. Le déplacement géographique du blues s'est parfaitement adapté à cet exode, en particulier à Chicago, où d'excellents labels de jazz se sont créés (Chess). On peut affirmer que le blues a rempli un rôle essentiel dans la création du Rock'n roll, du Rythm'n blues (nommé ensuite soul music) et même dans le développement du jazz.
C'est à partir des années 30/40 et de son expansion en direction des grandes villes que le blues connaîtra une seconde jeunesse, avec des artistes tel que Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Lightin' Hopkins, T-bone Walker, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker ou B.B King.Musique nire, le blues a connu un important succès auprès d'un public blanc venu du rock, durant les années 50 et 60. Pendant la décennie des années 60, un "blues boom" a même explosé, lançant des groupes blancs aussi divers que les Rolling Stones, les Bluesbreakers, les Kinks, le Spencer Davis Group, les Yarbirds ou Fleetwood Mac (pour la seconde naissance du "blues boom" vers les années 1967 et 1968). Mais c'est Alexis Korner qui est considéré comme le père de ce courant. L'essentiel des groupes pop et rock anglais a été influencé par les grands bluesmen noirs américains. Le blues en lui-même connaît de temps à autres des revival, sous l'égide de nouveaux spécialistes (Jeff Healey, Robert Cray, etc ...). Le genre musical demeure vivace, et reuni un public de fans très accrocheurs (revue Soul Bag, conventions du disque, etc ...).
Les premières chanteuses du blues furent Mamie Smith, Clara Smith, Ma Rayney et bien sûr Bettie Smith surnommée la "Reine du Blues". Les chanteurs furent Robert Johnson, Papa Charlie Jackson, Blind Lemon Jefferson ou même Leadbelly.
Aujourd'hui, la tradition du blues est perpétuée grâce à des artistes comme Buddy Guy, Albert Collins, Luther Allison, Taj Mahal, Robert Cray ou le regretté Stevie Ray Vaughan. Il faut noter qu'il existe de même des interférences constantes entre musiciens blues et rock, à l'exemple du groupe irlandais U2 qui invite BB King sur leur album "Rattle and Hum".
