Un des plus populaires des années 1980 et 1990, ce musicien originaire du nord-est de l'Angleterre a d'abord connu un succès phénoménal au sein du trio Police de 1978 à 1984. Il a ensuite suivi un parcours à part, caractérisé par son amour du jazz et son engagement pour diverses causes humanitaires. Il a notamment collaboré avec Dire Straits, Eric Clapton et Phil Collins ainsi que des musiciens venus d'autres champs que le rock comme Gil Evans, Branford Marsalis et I Muvrini.
