Recyclé dans le binaire, l'Allemand n'oublie pas ses origines (voir ses interprétations de Purcell et Saint-Saens) mais il chante aussi le twist de Chubby Checker et bien sûr son fameux "Cold song"

Knopfler et ses confrères en vendirent des milliers. Le genre folk anglais rupestre qui fait des heureux. C'est normal, c'est joli, bien produit, mais rien de neuf à l'horizon.

L'œuvre première des Notting Hillbillies va-t-elle brûler la politesse à la seconde des Travelling Wilburys ? Non, en fait, ces deux sympathiques mystifications n'ont rien à voir : les Willburys sont ( étaient ? ) cinq super-satrs batifolant gaiement, tandis que les Hillbillies se veulent quatre humbles âmes anglaises payant agréablement tribut à leurs influences américaines. A telle enseigne que Mark Knopfler lui-même s'y révèle d'une modestie vocale ( tant mieux ) et guitareuse ( bis mais pour ses potes ) tout à fait exemplaire : un seul titre de lui "Your own sweet way", chanté par lui ( mais les harmonies de ses potes font une perle du refrain , plus un solo miaulant à la Strato comme on les aime sur le final, "I feel like going home" de Charlie Rich ( idée, d'ailleurs et entre autres ... ). Lesquels potes le sont pour de vrai et plus que ça dans l'affaire : Brebdan Crocker ( sorte de Ry Cooder techno-pop britton râleur et jovial ) chante comme un hobo hagard, Steve Phillips ( bluesman acariâtre des Midlands mâtiné de rockabilly sourcilleux ) crée l'élan par ses lignes de crêtes subtiles et ses arpèges variés, et Guy Fletcher ( frère en claviers et arrangements de Mark et Dire Straits de la onzième heure ) leur tapisse à tous trois un fond d'orgue Hammond et de piano léger. Est-ce du blues ? Un peu. Du rock ? A la rigueur. De la country ? Pas vraiment. C'est de la pure musique des plaines, des montagnes et des bars d'Amérique, pourtant. Mais comme jouée e rêve par quatre amoureux d'un esprit disparu et dont l'unique héritier aurait pour nom feeling. Intraduisible en français, par conséquent, sauf si on ajoute "supérieur" comme un très bon vin ...
